Bikes and pedestrians
The West span of bridge is closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. However, transit links are available for pedestrians and bicyclists to travel across the Bay. In addition, Caltrans Bay Bridge Bicycle Shuttle carries bicyclists and their bikes over the Bay Bridge during weekday commute hours.
The East span has a bike/ped path, but has yet to link with Treasure Island. Currently the path can only be accessed from the Oakland side.
Transit
Over the bridge
AC Transit provides 24-hour bus connections between Downtown San Francisco and various points in the East Bay. All AC Transit buses can carry bicycles.
Muni's 108-Treasure Island bus provides 24-hour transit connection between San Francisco and Treasure Island. (There's no direct transit between Treasure Island and the East Bay.)
Same corridor
- BART provides frequent train service between San Francisco and the East Bay through the Transbay Tube. BART permits bicycles on board except on designated trains during weekday peak hours.
- San Francisco Bay Ferry
Casual carpooling
Unlike regular carpools, casual carpools are done without prior arrangements. Commuters looking for rides go to one of many pick up spots waiting for drivers picking them up. There are many pick up spots in the East Bay. There's also a designated pick up spot at the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco.
Drivers pick up riders so they can gain access to carpool lanes and pay a lower bridge toll from the East Bay(used to be free). There's no consensus as to whether riders should pay the drivers to cover the bridge toll. Some drivers accept money and others do not.
