TriMet operates a regional light rail system called MAX (Metropolitan Area Express) serving parts of Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham, and Clackamas. The light rail system interfaces with Portland Streetcar, WES Commuter Rail, and Amtrak. The light rail system also provides direct service to Portland International Airport.

Train service

The light rail system consists of five lines:

Blue Line — Hillsboro - City Center - Gresham
Red Line — Beaverton - City Center - Airport
Yellow Line — Expo Center - City Center - PSU
Green Line — Clackamas - City Center - PSU
Orange Line — City Center - PSU - Milwaukie


On weekdays, all lines operate every 15 minutes or less, with less frequent service at night. On weekends, all lines operate about every 17 minutes.

Riding MAX

Before you board the light rail, you need to buy a ticket or pass from a TriMet ticket machine (located at every station). MAX is a proof of payment system. Riders must have a valid or pass while onboard the light rail.

On the platform, board the train that goes to your station. The headsign on the vehicle will show the destination and line.

Bicycles

Bicycles can be taken aboard MAX at all hours on all cars with no additional fare. To ride on the light rail with a bike:

  • Board the train through the two end doors (with a bike decal)
  • Go to the bike area next to the door. Bike hooks are available on the low floor cars.

Selected light rail stations offers bicycle racks and lockers.

Disabled access

All trains are accessible to persons with disabilities (older high floor cars are not accessible, but are always coupled with new low floor cars that are). Elevator access is available at all below ground and freeway median stations.

Riders with mobility device need to use the two doors located by the center of each low floor cars. The train operator or the rider (by pressing a blue button by the doors) to deploy a ramp. When disembarking, request to deploy the ramp by pushing the ramp request strip by the grab bar or a blue button by the doors.
