BART tickets are basically stored value farecards. You purchase your farecard with whatever amount and the appropiate fare is deducted off your farecard every time you ride.

At the end of each ride, if there's any value remaining on the ticket, you will get your ticket back. If the value on the card is less than the fare, you will have to go to an add fare machine to pay for the difference.

BART ticket machines only sell regular tickets, which are priced at face value. BART offers discounted tickets for frequent riders, children, seniors and disabled. Discounted tickets works just like regular tickets except they're sold for less than the value contained on the ticket. Discounted tickets can be purchased online, by mail, or at selected locations.

BART does not offer any unlimited use pass. However, Muni adult Fast Pass offers unlimited rides on BART within San Francisco (any station between Embarcadero and Balboa Park).
